Radcliffe on Trent Male Voice Choir gave us a wonderfully entertaining evening with a variety of music last Saturday night at St Mary's.

The evening was made even more special with their soloist, Maria Veretenina, a name we all struggled to say correctly. Maria must have been at the front of the queue when the good Lord gave out beautiful voices, because it was a real pleasure to hear her and the choir.

Many thanks to them all for all their hard work and professionalism.

January is often a gloomy month after all the light and brightness of the Christmas season and makes you feel like hibernating, but DON'T! There is a lot going on at St Mary's, much of it is free and everyone is welcome.

Tomorrow, Saturday 21st Jan. we welcome the well travelled Radcliffe on Trent Male Voice Choir with a special soloist. Hurry if you'd still like to come!

On Sunday, we have our special informal monthly service called 'Encounters' at 9.30am followed by Holy Communion from the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) at 11.00am for those who prefer a more traditional service.

Christingle, Get-togethers and Concert.

This Sunday, 15th January 3.00pm for 3.15pm Service, we celebrate Christingle especially for families with small children. The children will be encouraged to make and take home their own Christingle, followed by refreshments for all.

All funds raised will go to The Children's Society.

Please note that following our 9.30am Service of Parish Communion will be a Wedding at 12.30pm, before setting up for Christingle.

The Games Afternoons are BACK! Starting this Thursday, 12th Jan at 2.00-4.00pm at St Mary's.

You are invited to an informal ‘Get-together’ at St. Mary’s Church, East Leake, on Saturday 4th February commencing at 3pm and finishing at 4.30pm.

Whether you have already booked a wedding in one of our five parish churches, or you are just starting to think about whether to get married in church, you are most welcome to come along and find out about filling in the necessary forms, choosing hymns, preparing your order of service, and how to book the bells and the choir. There will also be information about the cost of a church service – you may be pleasantly surprised! This will be an opportunity to meet other couples preparing for marriage, and to consider what is special about a church wedding.

Epiphany - January 6th.

After the busyness of Advent and Christmas and then the New Year, we are planning for our first event of January. This weekend the congregation will gather socially in church for an Epiphany party on Saturday, 7th January. Epiphany celebrates the coming of the Wise Men or the Three Kings to visit the baby, Jesus, usually on 6th January.

If you don't have a ticket yet, you'd better hurry up and call Rosemary on 856202.

The pink Advent candle was lit for Mary on Sunday, remembering her role as Mother of our Lord and her obedience to God. We light the white one for Jesus on Christmas Day, the day of His birth.

Our All Stars enjoyed their Christmas Party in the Hall, while the 9.30am Service was held in church.

In the afternoon we welcomed two families whose babies were baptised into the church, filling the church with happy noise.

On Saturday, the Family Advent Fun Afternoon was held in church when over 40 youngsters made crafts, enjoyed lots of goodies and had lots of fun. The also decorated the Church Christmas Tree which takes pride of place in the Lady Chapel ready for Christmas.

It's also ALL STARS CHRISTMAS PARTY on Sunday, 18th Dec. at 9.30am in St Mary's Hall. Adults are welcome to join the church service celebrating the 4th Sunday in Advent.

The small number of folks who set up the layouts in church would appreciate any help setting up and putting the seating back after the events. Please contact anyone in the church if you're willing to help.

What a Nativity Play!

Yesterday St Mary's held the most wonderful Nativity Play as part of our 9.30am Worship Together Service. The children were amazing and played their parts beautifully. There were two very clear Narrators, the Christmas Star and the Super(intendent) Star. Everyone was dressed in their lovely costumes with very cute angels, kings, shepherds, sheep and of course Mary and Joseph. Thank you to everyone who took part, including Revd David Gorick who was the Angel Gabriel. The Mums of all the children certainly worked very hard too and especially Revd Glynis and Cora. Even the congregation took part, waving their stars. Congratulations and well done.
Can we have another one next year please?

The third candle was lit on the Advent wreath yesterday to represent John, the Baptist.

On Sunday, the second candle of the Advent ring was lit to remember the Prophets who foretold of the birth of our Saviour. Who could have imagined that they could have prophesied hundreds of years before the arrival of Jesus?

It's time for Messy Church held on Sunday, 4th Dec. at 4.00pm in the church. Bring all the children along for some fun with them.

Don't forget! Next week on Sunday, 11th Dec at 9.30am there will be a Nativity Play as part of the Worship Together Service and we're looking for budding actors of the Junior kind to take part. Yesterday we celebrated the first week of Advent - the Coming, by lighting the first candle on the Advent wreath for the Patriarchs. During this period up to Christmas we learn of the message of the Coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ. He arrived in a time of global turmoil just like now and came with an important message to answer all our questions - Trust in God, our Heavenly Father who loves us all.
Join us at any of our services to learn and give your heart to Him.

WANTED! Children to join our youngsters taking part in our Nativity Play at St Mary's Church on Sunday, 11th Dec. at 9.30am! Come along to practice on Saturday, 10th at 10am, or just turn up on Sunday. Parts for ALL the CHILDREN!

On Saturday, 10th Dec. why not continue on down to Costock church for their Christmas Tree Festival after the Nativity rehearsal?

Concert this weekend!

This weekend, on Saturday night at 7.30pm Ratcliffe Chorale will once again be giving a concert at St Mary's in aid of Save the Children Fund, organised by the Catholic Church. You'll have to hurry if you want tickets to this popular concert.

This will be the only concert open to the public before Christmas at St Mary's, but there are plenty more coming up in the New Year.

Our own Community Choir has been busy practising too. The last two session are on 5th & 12th December at 7.15pm at St Mary's. Come along and join them. Singing is good for you!

Please note that the Advent Family Fun Afternoon has been moved to Saturday 17th December 2.30-4.30pm at St Mary's.

November Events.

Getting ready for the Christmas Card Fair and Coffee Morning on November 11th.

All activities ceased for two minutes in respect and remembrance for those who have died in all the wars to date. Our prayers go with all their families and for those who are still on active service.

The Service of Remembrance was held this year in East Leake by the Memorial on Sunday, Nov 13th.

Delicious home made cakes were for sale too!

The Games afternoons are becoming popular so why not come along to the last one this on Dec 8th if you'd like to make new friends and have a little fun playing board games. Refreshments are available as usual too.

Don't forget! The Ratcliffe Chorale Concert next Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets are going fast.

All Saints Day.

November 1st is All Saint's Day or All Hallows Day, when we celebrate all the Saints in history particularly those who do not have a special feast day. We will be holding a Commemoration of the Departed Service at St Mary's on Sunday, 6th November at 6.00pm. Everyone is welcome.

Messy Church will meet again on Sunday, 6th November at 4.00pm but will have refreshments in the Hall at 5.00pm to allow time to prepare for the 6.00pm service.

Friday, 11th November is St Mary's Annual Charity Christmas Card Fair and Coffee Morning, 10.00-12.00noon. Come along and purchase your Christmas cards and support charities. Home made cakes will also be for sale.Please put this in your diary. Please note that there will be two minutes silence at 11.00am as a respect for all those who lost their lives fighting for their country.

Service of Remembrance at the War Memorial.
Following the Worship Together service on Sunday, 13th November at 9.30am there will be the service at the War Memorial at 10.55am. Everyone is welcome to come along and show your respect for the fallen.

Bible Sunday

Yesterday was Bible Sunday and was especially interesting this year because of the 400th Anniversary of the King James Bible. As our Area Dean, Revd John Bentham said, it was the first Bible to be translated into English, ordered by King James to be read to and by EVERYONE. It is now read world-wide. Imagine not being able to read or permitted to read the Bible!
We have the education, freedom and understanding to read for ourselves and we are missing such important information and messages if we do not read our Bibles. It has had a profound influence on our language too.

Do you have a Bible? If you haven't read it for a while or never read it, try starting with the New Testament, which is all about Jesus e.g. the book of Mark. A well translated Bible in modern language can help too. Ask the clergy for advice.
Set aside a quiet time to read it, because you need to concentrate and wait for God to speak to you through His words. Man may have written the words, but they were inspired by God.
This will be THE most important book you have ever read!

The Churches together in the South Notts Cluster (East Leake and the 4 Benefice churches, Gotham and their group of churches, Normanton on Soar and Sutton Bonington) will be getting together tomorrow to welcome our new Community Youth Worker at Gotham.

Wed. 19th Oct. 7.30pm Celebration and Commissioning for Rebecca Mockett, new community youth worker in partnership with Nottingham Youth for Christ.

We may worship in different churches but we all worship the same loving God who wants us all to work and pray together, as well as help those who have not yet joined us to discover that Jesus is the Way to our God. God loves everyone and wants us to have a close relationship with Him.

This weekend is Bible Sunday when we will be using the word of God to share with each other and praise God. Come along and join us when our Area Dean, Revd John Bentham will be speaking at the 8am Holy Communion, 9.30am Encounters Service and the 11.00am Book of Common Prayer Service.

Yesterday, Sunday 9th, we welcomed lots of families for the theme for Worship Together which was 'Worrying' with an excellent sketch by the Wright family.
Yes, we're all worried from time to time, but statistics say that only 8% of our worries are worth worrying about, as most will either disappear, resolve themselves or never happen.
Revd Peter Hill, our Archdeacon gave the address/talk and quoted from the Bible 'Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.'
So...let your worries go, give thanks and trust that God will give you the answers you need.

Tonight, the Quiz and Curry night is being held at the Heat restaurant. Contact Cora if you still haven't bought your ticket. Numbers are limited.

Positive Parenting sessions at St Mary's Church. On November 1st a new group is starting up on Tuesday evenings for six weeks at 7.45pm for parents of young children. It's an opportunity for young parents to get together and share experiences. Watch out for more details.

Yesterday we welcomed Revd Philip Humphreys to St Mary's and were encouraged to 'keep on going to the end'. Sometimes life seems very difficult, but God will help us through. It could be that someone comes along to help, someone to talk to, or an unexpected pleasant surprise. Our reward waits for us in heaven, so we can't give up. Maybe YOU are the someone that God is sending. Often the best way to get through hard times is to help someone else.

Next Sunday we welcome Revd Peter Hill, our Archdeacon. Come along at 9.30am to our Worship Together Service and make sure your bring the children.

St Mary's is planning lots of events and we hope that you will come to some, if not all of them - see the list under 'Forthcoming Events' and on our website. Everyone is always welcome whether you are a regular churchgoer or not. Watch out for further details.

Thanks for the Harvest!

Yesterday's service of Harvest Thanksgiving welcomed lots of children and their families bringing harvest gifts for the needy and the Friary Drop-In Centre. Thank you to you all from St Mary's and from whoever receives your gifts. Many people are struggling hard to make ends meet and your gifts are much appreciated.

The Jewellery-making evening last Thursday at St Mary's, was another fun time for those involved.

And now there's something the men in your family might enjoy! On Monday, October 10th at 7.30pm, there will be a Sports Quiz and Curry at the Heat Restaurant, in the centre of East Leake.
Tickets are £10 for the whole meal ((popadom, curry selection and rice & naan). Come as a team or join one on the night.
There are limited numbers to 35, so get your ticket soon from Cora or contact us at stmarys@eastleake.net .

September is Harvest time and time for us all to be thankful for everything that God has provided for us. Thanks for the harvest in the fields, in the hedgerows, in the gardens and what we produce from all this goodness; baking, bottling and jam making. Have you taken a walk lately and looked for blackberries, or picked plums or apples? Don't let it go to waste.

St John the Baptist Church, Stanford on Soar and St Helena's Church, West Leake sharing the Thanksgiving Service: Sunday 18th Sept. 6.00pm
Both churches will share a Bring and Share Harvest Tea at 4.30pm before the service. All contributions of produce will be for sale to members of the congregation and the remainder will be donated to the Carpenters Arms, as last year.

Each church will be decorating for Harvest the Saturday before their service, so come along and join in the fun.

We also give thanks for all those happy children who came along for our first 'Messy Church' gathering last Sunday. 50 youngsters came along and had lots of fun. Messy Church will be held every 1st Sunday afternoon in the month. Come along with the children next month or join us tomorrow at Worship Together for all the family. Our Archdeacon, Revd Peter Hill will be joining us too.

We regret to announce that the Revd Ken Wayne died on Tuesday, 30th August. Our thoughts and prayers are with his widow, Daphne, their daughter, Elizabeth and her husband.

Messy Church comes to St Mary's Church next week starting on Sunday, September 4th at 4.00pm, in St Mary's Church. It will be held on the first Sunday on the month.For more details see www.messychurch.org.uk or call Phil or Amanda on 856628 or Cora on 07885 635374.
Messy Church was originally one church's attempt to be church for families who might want to meet Jesus, belong to their local church and bring up their children as Christians but can't cope with traditional Sunday morning church services.

Many thanks to all those who helped with the Church and Hall Annual Clean last weekend. The hard work was so much easier with so many volunteers. We can now enjoy the nice, clean facilities and all will be ready for the start of term which is coming fast.

Last Sunday, we welcomed our Area Dean, Revd Canon John Bentham who will be taking some of our services while Revd Glynis is away on Sabbatical/Study Leave for the next two months. The service was followed by a very warm, sunny Bring and Share lunch in the Rectory garden enjoyed by approx. 30 members of the Benefice.
We wish Glynis every good wish for a beneficial break away from her very busy schedule, peace and quiet for reflection and study.

Saturday morning, 20th Aug. The Church Big Clean! This Saturday we are calling all volunteers to come and give a little of their time to give the church its annual clean. If we have sufficient volunteers we would also like to give the Hall its annual clean too. Please bring your rubber gloves and cleaning equipment.

Sun. 21st Aug. 10.00am. - At the Parish Communion United Service, the preacher will be Revd Canon John Bentham. This will be the last service Revd Glynis conducts before her sabbatical/study leave and we're taking the opportunity to get together. There will be a Bring and Share lunch in the Rectory garden starting at 12 noon.

As usual, if the weather doesn't behave the event will be held in St Mary's Hall.

THANK YOU! A big thank you to all those involved in the Landlubber's Children's Summer Club taking place in St Mary's Church and Hall. It was the first time that Churches Together had combined efforts to provide the children from the community some fun during the summer holidays. 55 children were registered and had a wonderful time.

Sunday, 14th Aug. - Worship Together and baptisms. This Sunday there will be a special Worship Together service including two baptisms. Come along and welcome the new little ones.

Annual Clean. Saturday, 20th August. 9.00am -12noon at St Mary's we will be giving the church and the hall their annual clean ready to welcome everyone. If you can spare a little time we would appreciate all volunteers. Having clean facilities makes them a safe and welcoming environment and we try to keep them that way.

We're on the second day of the Landlubbers Children's Summer Club at St Mary's and lots of youngsters are having fun in the church and the hall. This is the first year that Churches Together in East Leake have organised a Summer Club and there has been lots of fun working together.

Petition to include R.E. in the new Baccalaureate We regret to inform you that the Department for Education confirmed this week that Religious Education will not be included in the new English Baccalaureate for a second year.
The decision to exclude Religious Education in favour of music, art and IT was made despite a nationwide campaign by Christian groups and objections from some MPs.
In a survey of nearly 2,000 state-maintained secondary schools, it found that a quarter were not providing statutory RE for 14 to 16-year-olds, and it expects this figure to rise.
This is devastating for a country based on Christian principles and the faith.
PLEASE write to your MP and ask that they reconsider! It really is important!

Just a quick note about Landlubbers Holiday Club. This summer the Landlubbers team are all busy preparing for our first Churches Together in East Leake Holiday Club. It is pirate themed holiday club and will be happening at 9.15am - 12.15pm on the 2nd - 5th August.

Leicestershire schools finished for the summer last Friday and Nottinghamshire schools will finish this week, so please watch out for lots of youngsters enjoying their holidays.

Last week we said 'Goodbye' to Revd Claire Goode and her family who are moving to 'pastures new'. Our prayers and good wishes go with them.

Update on the R.E.A.C.T petition
Over 140,000 people signed the petition to include Religious Education in the new English Baccalaureate.
It was presented by 6 MPs to 10 Downing St on June 29th.
113 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion in support of the issue.
MPs and senior Peers continue to speak out in parliament and publicly on the importance of including RE in the English Baccalaureate. The Government are planning to make their position clear on this issue by the summer parliamentary recess. Thank you to all who signed this petition. Please continue to pray that the right decision will be made.

OPEN CHURCHES WEEKEND
Many Anglican churches in Nottinghamshire are opening their doors to visitors on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July. St Mary’s Church in East Leake will be open between 2.30pm and 5.30pm on both days. Regular free guided tours of the building are on offer, and there will be refreshments available. The historic books usually locked away will be on display, and hopefully the ancient shawm will be brought down for inspection.
Why not drop in and learn a bit more about this historic building?

If you've never been inside St Mary's Church, now's your chance.

Don't forget the Coffee Morning at St Mary's too, every Friday morning 10.00-12.00noon. It's a chance to meet new and old friends for a chat while having a tea or coffee and biscuits.

Mini Music for Mums and toddlers will be in the Hall, 9.30-10.45am. Refreshments available there too. There's no need to book - just come along. You'll be very welcome.

Stanford Church welcomes the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham

The Rt Revd Paul Butler, Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham will visit the Church of St John the Baptist at Stanford on Soar to preach at the church's patronal festival this Sunday, 26th June. The service will be a Festal Evensong at 6.00pm and will be a United Benefice service. All are welcome to attend.

A very happy time was spent last Sunday, Father's Day at our special service. Everyone was offered a warm 'Bacon Buttie' and coffee or tea before the service and each Father was given a chocolate bar afterwards. Two fathers were interviewed and asked for their thoughts and blessings of being a father. Thanks are due to all those involved in the planning and cooking the breakfast.

This Sunday, St Mary's Church will be holding one of its monthly, more informal 'Encounters' services at 9.30am followed by the more formal Holy Communion BCP service at 11.00am, so you can choose which you would prefer to attend. Or you can attend both! Come and try them out. Everyone is welcome of course.

St Mary's Women's Group will once again be at the East Leake Carnival, serving refreshments in the Hall. Why not call in for a cuppa and a home made cake, then view the special exhibition on Scouting given by the East Leake and District History Society, also in the hall? See if you can spot someone you know in their photographs.

ROYAL WEDDING - BELL RINGING
Congratulations to all our bellringers and those who assisted. Church bells in the benefice rang out to mark the wedding of HRH Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton, as they did across the country.
The first ringing was at East Leake where the local band met at 12:30 to ring for about 25 minutes to celebrate this important event.
In addition, a special peal was arranged at Stanford-on-Soar which took just short of three hours to ring.

ASCENSION DAY THURSDAY 2^nd JUNE
A service of Holy Communion will be held at 7pm on Ascension Day. It is hoped that this will be a convenient time for any who are at work during the day, and that it will be early enough for those who don’t like to be out late in the evening. This year it will be a service without hymns, similar to the Wednesday morning and 8am Sunday services.

WORSHIP TOGETHER ON PENTECOST SUNDAY 12th JUNE

Two of our youth leaders, Stephanie and Tim Hutton, are planning our Worship Together service for 9.30am on 12^th June. Young people will be involved with them in the service. Our Area Dean, John Bentham, who is conducting some of our services on that day, plans to attend.Why not come along and join us. It promises to be a lively service.
It may be a while ago, but the Children's Easter Club, Champions Challenge was once again a success with everyone having lots of fun.

A big “thank you” is due to Cora, Phil and their vast team of leaders and helpers who put so much energy and enthusiasm into leading Champions Challenge during the first week of the Easter holidays. For three mornings St. Mary’s Church was a hive of activity and fun for 50 children, as they learned about the true meaning of Easter through crafts, songs, quizzes, stories and games, all linked to a sporting theme.

During Easter, it was good to share with Reverend Mother and the Sisters in their first Easter Vigil in the impressive new chapel at the convent at Costock. The former Archbishop of York, The Most Revd Dr David Hope, was the preacher and presided at the Eucharist.

400 Years of the King James Bible Celebration

The 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible, the best selling book of all time is being celebrated this year and an Exhibition is being held at St Mary's Church, East Leake.

Over the weekend of the 13th to 16th of May there will be an exhibition in support of our celebrations in St. Mary’s Church. The exhibition will be open each afternoon until 5:00pm and all day Saturday the 14th from 9:00am to 6:00pm.

Whilst the thought of visiting an exhibition based on a 400 year old book might sound boring, I would suggest you come along – you might be surprised!

On Sunday, 15th May, Canon Jack Higham will be preaching at the 9.30am service. He is an expert on the King James Bible, so we look forward to discovering more about what is so special about this bible.

Sunday, 15th May is also the beginning of Christian Aid week when envelopes will be delivered around the village. There will also be the annual Christian Aid mini market at the Methodist Church, where you can buy plants, cakes and preserves between 10.00-12.00noon. But come early for the best choice.

How we seem to hate change, but change we must sometimes.
Here are some changes in our area, which may interest you. Follow the blog for more events coming up throughout the summer!

Firstly, St Mary's has two newly elected Churchwardens, Mrs Chris O'Nions and Mr Conrad Oatey who will be admitted to office on Monday 6th June at Southwell Minster at a special church service at 7.30pm. Please go along and support them if you can.

Remember Revd Claire Goode who came to us as Curate a few years ago? Claire has been covering the vacancy at Gotham since Revd Steve Osman moved on to another post. Now Claire is to become Priest in Charge of the Trent and Tons Group of Parishes (a group of parishes near Southwell). Details of when are yet to be announced. We wish Claire and her family God's blessing as they prepare for this move.

The Revd Richard Coleman is to be installed as Priest in Charge of the Gotham parishes on 11th May at St Lawrence's Church, Gotham.

The Good News Centre, Loughborough will only be open on Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays, starting this month, due to falling customer numbers. Please continue to support the centre and encourage your friends to visit it.

We have been welcoming quite a number of new members of the congregation lately. A 5 week course called 'Everybody Welcome' is beginning on Thursdays from 12.00noon - 2.00pm. at the Rectory including a light lunch. The first session will be on 5th May. This is to look at how well we welcome newcomers and visitors and how to be more welcoming and inclusive. However, friendly we think we are, there is always room for improvement. Please contact the Rector for details and numbers.

Councillor Mrs Marie Males has now reached the end of her year as Mayor. To mark the occasion, Normanton Village Choir will be performing at St Helena's on Tuesday 10th May at 7.30pm.

Rempstone Village Hall was officially opened by the Rt. Hon. Kenneth Clarke, QC, MP on March 26th. The Annual Plant sale will be held on May 7th 10.00-4.30pm at the Rempstone Village Hall in a joint venture with the Gardening Group. Money raised will be divided between the Church and the Hall. If you're looking for plants, flowers, shrubs or vegetable plants, this is an event not to be missed.

Last but not least, Philippa Hanna will give a concert of Contemporary Christian Music on Friday 6th May at 7.30pm at St Lawrence's Church, Gotham. For tickets, please contact someone at the church.

St Mary’s Church, East Leake, wishes to appoint an administrative assistant to Revd. Glynis Hetherington Rector of the East Leake Benefice of five churches, who is the line manager.

The job is part time, 8 hours per week at East Leake Rectory, on a day/days to be arranged with the Rector.

The successful applicant would take over from the current assistant after a short period of familiarisation.

The first 6 months of the employment will be a probationary period. On successful completion of that period, the appointment becomes a permanent post.

An applicant must be in sympathy with the Church of England, but need not necessarily be a member of St Mary’s church.

St George's Day to be observed on Monday May 2nd!

Please note! While the country in general is celebrating St George's Day today, 23rd April, the Church of England and the Catholic Church will be observing it on Monday, May 2nd, as this year it falls in Holy Week which takes precedence over other events for the church.

Therefore, those who have noticed that the flag is not flying at St Mary's church, this is the reason and it will be flown on Monday, May 2nd instead. It will also be flown for the Royal Wedding on Friday, 29th April.

No doubt you have had a little surprise when checking in to the blog today. Yes, we're trying a little something different. We are trying to keep the blog fresh and of interest, as well as bringing you the latest from St Mary's.

It's Spring, the cherry blossom is out and all things become new. Soon it will be Easter and we remember that our Lord Jesus rose again. Throughout Lent we have been re-evaluating ourselves, our lives and becoming new through Him. Praise Him for all the good things He gives us.

Champions Challenge, the children's Easter Club started really well today with lots of excited youngsters coming to St Mary's for crafts, games, quizzes, stories, songs and fun. They have been busy making fudge, origami, flags and name badges today too.

Tomorrow is Palm Sunday when we remember Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, welcomed by the crowds waving palm branches. Come along to one of our services at St Mary's at 8.00am or 9.30am. Or come along to Stanford on Soar church at 3.00pm and follow the donkey, (yes, a real one!) from the gate to the church for the short service there.

The donkey will be coming from Manor Farm Donkey Sanctuary in East Leake. And bring your camera if you like!

The fortnightly meetings of Acorns for Mothers and Toddlers finished this week, but has been replaced by our Friday morning 'Mini Music' for them at 9.15-11.00am. All parents or carers with their little ones are welcome to St Mary's Hall. There is a weekly charge of £1 per family to cover costs of refreshments and supplies.

Annual Church Meeting Tonight. Your Church Needs YOU!

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting is tonight, Monday 11th April at 7.30pm in church.
New officers will be elected to the Parochial Church Committee for the next year or longer. If you are a member of St Mary's, you can vote in the selecting process.
There are still some posts available, so consider putting yourself forward please to help your church.
Those who have already served are ready to support the new members, so don't worry if you don't know what's involved. Help is at hand.

This afternoon, the Mothers' Union will be meeting in church at 2.15pm when the theme will be 'Easter'.

Tuesday, 12th April is the last of the Churches Together Lent Reflective Services and will be held at St Mary's Church at 7.30pm.

Next Sunday will be Palm Sunday and there will be services at 8.00am and 9.30am at St Mary's as usual, plus an afternoon service at Stanford church at 3.00pm with a procession led by the donkey from Manor Farm Donkey Sanctuary.
This is always a popular praise event, so come along and join in. Let us re-enact Christ's journey into Jerusalem on the donkey.

In the evening, there will be a United Benefice Service at West Leake at 6.00pm, based on music from Stainer's Crucifixion.

Calling all young people!
Champion's Challenge Holiday Club starts on Monday 18th-20th April, 9.15am - 12.15pm. If you haven't signed up yet, there is still time on Monday morning, but come early. There is a limited to the numbers.

This is Holy Week when there will also be Compline Services each evening at St Mary's, Monday to Wednesday at 8.00pm. The Womens Group kindly provide Hot Cross Buns after the service on Monday evening too.

A Special weekend

This weekend was a special one not just for all those celebrating Mothering Sunday, but also two of our very special members of our congregation, Ken and Daphne Wayne who celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They were presented with a card and a basket of fruit from the congregation by the Churchwardens, Steven Barrow and Graham Brown. We wish them many more happy years together.

All the ladies in the congregation received a small posy of daffodils handed out by all the children for Mothering Sunday.

Saturday night proved to be a winner too, as the Nottingham Concert Band gave a wonderful 'Spring Fever' concert to the packed church to start off celebrating their 20th Anniversary Year. Many of those attending may have remembered their Conductor, Robert Parker from his time spent teaching in East Leake.

If you missed the concert there are still other opportunities to hear them as they will be at:

West Bridgford 'Proms in the Park on Sat. 25th June
Ruddington, Anniversary Concert on Sat. 16th July and
Loughborough, Bandstand concert on Sunday 24th July.

Litter Pickers. A small group of volunteers from St Mary's turned up at the Parish Office to join the village Litter Pick Day on Saturday. We hope to increase the numbers next year when more can be done, but preferably there will be less to pick up.

Helping our Community

East Leake Parish Council are running their annual Litter Pick on Saturday. Why not come along and join some of us from St Mary's to help our community? Be at the Parish Office just before 10.00am on Saturday morning, 2nd April, when you'll be given all the tools you need. Hopefully, it will be a sunny, warm day for the work. Every little helps.

Then if you've planned ahead and bought your tickets, you can sit comfortably and listen to the Nottingham Concert Band in the church from 7.30pm giving their 'Spring Fever' concert.

Sunday, 3rd April will be Mothering Sunday and there will be a special service for our Mother Church, Mary, the Mother of Jesus and thanks for our own Mothers. This Sunday is also called 'Refreshment Sunday' when those in service were given time off from their work to visit their Home Church and their mother.

Next Wednesday, 6th April, the bells may be ringing as we welcome visiting bellringers from Stoke on Trent at 1.30pm.

Please consider running for election for the 2011 P.C.C. or as a Churchwarden as many of those already involved will have completed their term of office. There is under 2 weeks left before the APCGM. You will have lots of support and assistance from everyone, so take the plunge and say 'Yes'. Pray about it and see if God is giving you a little nudge to do your part in your church.

Yesterday was the deadline for all those worshipping regularly at St Mary's Church. Once registered, you are entitled to stand for election and/or vote at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting on April 11th at 7.30pm in the church.

If you want to know what a P.C.C. does, there is a leaflet at the back of church that explains, or you could just ask someone who is already on the PCC. Everyone is welcome whatever their skills or abilities to get involved in the life of the church as ALL are important - part of the body of Christ.

Lots of helpers are needed to share the roles within the church and YOU could just the one we need. The tasks are not onerous because the load is shared. After all, the Rector can't be expected to do EVERYTHING!

We had a great visit from Bishop Tony and his wife, Lucille yesterday and have another special service coming up next Sunday with Robert Ingles of the Gideons at 9.30am. Why not come and join us?

Activists come in all types, but the kind of activist we're talking about are those who are doing as Christ told us - getting involved in our community, helping others, standing up for injustice.
Jesus was an activist and did just that.
He stood up for what was right and most important, he did God's will.

Community Care is a local organisation where many people volunteer to support those in the community. They visit those who can't get out and about, provide transport for hospital and Drs appointments, run coffee mornings (St Mary's is on Friday mornings) etc.

Religious Education is under threat in our secondary schools! The government is planning the new Baccalaureate, but plans to omit Religious Education from the Humanities options i.e. History and Geography.
There is a petition on http://www.reactcampaign.co.uk/ website. Please add your name to this petition so that R.E. will continue to be taught in schools and be part of the new qualification. This is really important!

So, to be an activist so far, all you need to do is, one day of litter picking with lots of others, contact the Community Care people to see what you can do, and sign your name on a petition! That's not so hard.
Christians are just like everyone else, and they do care about their neighbours, their community and are prepared to do something about it.
Come on and join St Mary's and all the churches together in East Leake.

Lent, music and the Bishop!

This Sunday, 6th March is the last Sunday before Lent begins next week - services at 8.00am, 9.30am. There will be a Teatime Sunday session in St Mary's Hall for those with young families later at 4.00pm.

I wonder if they'll have pancakes for tea?

Tuesday, 8th is Shrove Tuesday followed by Ash Wednesday when there will be two services at St Mary's for the Imposition of ashes, 10.00am and 7.30pm .

Also, this Sunday the Community Choir will give a concert at 3.00pm in the church. Come along and support the choir after all their hard efforts over the past six weeks.

DON'T FORGET! There will be a very special service at 9.30am - Worship Together with the Rt Revd Tony Porter, Bishop of Sherwood on the following Sunday, 13th March, the first Sunday of Lent.

The Prayer Book Service including Holy Communion, formerly held on the first Sunday of the month will start at 11.00am. Everyone is welcome to either or both services.

Only one more practice in St Mary's 7.30-9.00pm on Thursday 3rd March before Sunday, 6th March, 3.00pm when there will be a short concert for everyone. Just come along to support them and enjoy the music!

'Mini Music' - a new group for Mothers and Toddlers!

Last Friday was the first time that several Mothers and Toddlers met in St Mary's Hall to start the new 'Mini Music' group. We hope that there are many more who would like to join this group each Friday at 9.30-10.30am to entertain the toddlers and meet other Mums. This is not restricted just to Mothers - fathers or other carers can bring their children too. The cost is £1 per family only to include refreshments. Just come along.

Candlemas

Yesterday was the beginning of Candlemas and the church season of Epiphany is finished. We remember the presentation of Christ in the Temple to Simeon who had been promised sight of the Christ before he died.
As we pray, please let us remember those less fortunate than ourselves, particularly those in countries where the weather is showing its worst side.
There is a rhyme:
If Candlemas Day is clear and bright, winter will have another bite.
If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain, winter is gone and will not come again. As usual we have all four seasons mixed up together, so who knows what we'll have. Our brothers and sisters in Scotland, Australia and America are having snow or cyclones. We also remember all those in countries in conflict. We have much for which to be thankful.

It was very cold but dry for our weekend at Willersley Castle, Derbyshire and there were lots of activities both inside and outdoors. It's always a good weekend to share with our friends, or to make new ones.

The Abbot Club will meet tonight at the Nags Head at 8pm
The Community Choir will also meet tonight in church at 7.15pm. Please note the next meeting of the choir will be next MONDAY, not Thursday for that week only.

Do you like singing but never had the chance to join a choir? If you do, come along to the Community Choir practices starting tomorrow night, Thursday at St Mary's Church at 7.30pm.

This is open to everyone from the East Leake area, young or young at heart. Come early at 7.15pm for a coffee and a chat if you'd like.

Friday, 28th January-Sunday 30th January many of the congregation will be going to Willersley Castle in Derbyshire for the Parish Weekend. We always enjoy the weekend, getting to know one another with music, games, crafts, prayers, contemplation and Sunday morning service along with great food and the friendly staff. There's lots to do whether you like walking in the grounds or further afield, swimming in the Castle's pool, shopping or visiting local places of interest either as a group or by yourself.

The Community Choir is back! Rehearsals will be in St Mary's 7.30-9pm, starting on Thursday 27th January for six weeks. Arrive from 7.15pm for rehearsals, for a coffee and chat first.

Please bring any other people who want to give it a try
(children are welcome, especially teenagers? but under 16s must be accompanied by an adult or signed in)

Christingle this Sunday!

This Sunday, 16th January, 3.00pm at St Mary's Church is the annual Christingle Service for all youngsters. Come & make your own Christingle - see left.
After the short service there will be a tea party for the children, their family & friends. Christingle is sponsored by the Children's Society and all donations will be given to this worthy charity on Sunday.

There will also be:
Holy Communion at 8.00am and
Parish Communion at 9.30am as usual.

Last Saturday, as expected, there was much fun and laughter at Gotham church for 'Puss in Boots' our pantomime, acted by members of our cluster of churches in South Nottinghamshire. Given that there is no time for rehearsals, the ad-libbing is as good as the script! A big thank you to all who took part and especially to Revd Glynis for writing the script during her 'resting time' after all the Christmas services.

Oh no it isn't! Oh yes it is! Has it been a long time since you saw a pantomime? This Saturday 8th, Jan. at 6.00pm you can see a variation on 'Puss in Boots' at St Lawrence's Church, Gotham with a cast from the members of the churches in the South Notts. Cluster.
There will be family party games and a Bring and Share supper too. There is always lots to eat, so just bring something to share on the buffet tables. We don't often get a chance to meet each other so come and join us all for some fun and lots of laughter at our 'home-grown' pantomime. (If you need transport please contact the Rector).

We have some changes coming up in February which might interest those families who enjoy our Worship Together Service on the 2nd Sunday. Watch for further details.

Thieves in the churchyard again!

Thefts from the churchyard. Please be aware if you are leaving Christmas wreaths for your loved ones in St Mary's churchyard that thieves are continuing to help themselves. The Police have once again been made aware and are checking the area frequently. We appreciate that this is most distressing and ask that everyone keeps their eyes open for anything suspicious and report it to the Police.

The pink Advent candle was lit on Sunday. 19th to remember Mary, the young girl who gave birth to Jesus, the Holy Child. It must have been a shock to her, being a virgin to know she was pregnant and to be told that the child would be the special one prophesied in Isaiah - Immanuel (God with us). The important thing is that she gladly accepted it - if that was what God wanted of her, she would obey.

*Carolling at the Three Horseshoes Pub at 6.30pm tonight Tuesday, 21st, raising money for the Friary Drop-In Centre. Please note that this will take place inside the pub, due to the freezing weather! There are many homeless people out in this sub zero cold who desperately need a warm place to go, some hot food and a shower. Will you help this support this worthy charity?

Please note! St Mary's Coffee Morning will still be held on Friday morning, 24th Dec at 10.00-12.00noon HOWEVER it will be held in St Mary's HALL instead, just this week!
Please be aware that water has been running down the road and created a sheet of ice outside the hall. Salt and grit have been put down but it's difficult to continue to keep clear. The authorities have been notified.

Christmas Day is coming closer and while people are busy sending cards and buying gifts, the church calendar is busy too.
Tomorrow is the 3rd week of Advent when the next candle will be lit on our Advent wreath. Last week we remembered the Prophets and lit the second candle. This week we remember John the Baptist and will light the third one. This Sunday is also Worship Together Sunday and there is always something for the children. You are welcome to bring your pram, pushchair or wheelchair too.

Just gone! Sat. 4th Dec. - Christmas Crafts Day. Children from babies to 10 year olds who came to St Mary's on Saturday with their families enjoyed making a variety of crafts in spite of the icy conditions. The crafts were then used to illustrate the Nativity story afterwards.

Sun. 12th Dec. 9.30am. - Worship Together. This family friendly service is for everyone. Prams, pushchairs and wheelchairs welcome.

Tues. 14th Dec. 7.00pm - Young People's Uniformed Organisations Carol Service at St Mary's, East Leake. All members of the Scout and Guide Association are invited to this special annual service next week.

Sat. 18th Dec. 10.30am - Decorating the Christmas Tree at St Mary's Church. Children, we need your help! You are invited to come and help decorate the tree inside the church. The big tree outside the church is already up and waiting to be switched on, and the Christmas lights at St Mary's Hall will be on this week.

Saturday, 4th Dec. 2.00-4.00pm in St Mary's Church there will be a Christmas Crafts Fun afternoon for all the family, especially the children. Come along and join the fun. It's free!

On Sunday, the first day of Advent, the first candle was lit to remember the Patriarchs. The children helped with the lighting then went to make their own Advent wreaths during the service.

Please remember your neighbours! Not everyone is able to join in the fun and excitement. The severe, cold and snowy weather causes many problems, so please don't forget to check on your neighbours to see if they need any help, especially those who live alone. Someone checking on them could make all the difference. As Christians, we must take care of each other and treat one another as we would like to be treated ourselves. That means everyone, not just those who are already friends.

This time of year charities who help the homeless are desperate for your help. Imagine not having your home to keep you warm in this cold weather. Which of us would change places with them?

Fun and laughter at Turkey and Tinsel today

We welcomed fourteen guests from the East Leake community to our first Turkey and Tinsel event today and great fun was had by all.

There were games with prizes, a most delicious Christmas dinner and dessert at the Three Horseshoes Pub, followed by entertainment and singing before 'Santa Claus' with an elf came to hand out gifts to all the guests.

Everyone went home after having refreshments including home-made mince pies. We'd like to thank everyone for making it such an enjoyable day, especially to Canon Philip Humphries who expertly played the piano and sang for us. Watch out for more photos.

Advent begins this Sunday, 28th November.

This marks the beginning of the church looking forward to the coming of Jesus as a baby, the Messiah. He came to show us how to live so that we might have a close, loving relationship with God who loves us all. It also reminds us that we are looking forward to Jesus coming again.

Plans are going ahead for all the services and events in Advent up to Christmas. Whatever your skill or talent you could be using it for the benefit of the community, and we all DO have talents or skills. God gave us all talents, some greater than others but you mustn't waste them. You could be good at making friends or be a good listener - they're in very short supply these days!

If you're not a regular churchgoer but would like to be part of this exciting time, you're very welcome to join us for whatever time you can contribute. Even our churches in East Leake pool their talents e.g. the talented embroidery Banner Group.

It's a great way to make new friends in a fun and friendly atmosphere, we'll always be glad to see you and use 'many hands to make light work'. All are welcome, men, women or children and all ages.

Just check the list in the Forthcoming Events column. Are you good at crafts, carpentry, bellringing, singing, sewing, baking, drama, photography, or do you have lots of good ideas and are very organised? Or would you just like to come along and help with whatever's needed?

The bell can ring again in a Madagascan church. The picture is of the new "sally" bell rope at our Mission partners Sam and Violette Beeton's church in Madagascar, which was made and donated by Phil Stanley of Ellis Ropes. Little did they know when they visited us this year that the Stanley family had the answer to their prayers, when they mentioned that their bell rope had worn out. Many thanks to the Stanley family for their kind donation. As you can see it's already in good use.

Turkey and Tinsel, Thursday 25th November, 10.30am-3.00pm.
Time is running out if you'd like to join us next Thursday for our special day of fun and entertainment. Spaces are still available, but we need the final numbers by tomorrow, Sunday for the Christmas lunch at the Three Horseshoes (cost £5). We hope to fill the church with laughter. Folks from the Residential homes in East Leake have been invited as well as those who live alone. If you need transport, please contact Doris on 852778 or Sue on 820252.

St Mary's Church Hall roof.
We have just been promised funding from Grass Roots charity to repair the Church Hall roof following recent vandalism. Work could begin as early as next week, but for those who use the hall regularly can be assured that things will continue as usual and any disruption will be kept to a minimum. We appreciate your patience while this work is being done.

Samaritan's Purse. This is the Christmas Box Appeal for poor and needy children. Over 300 shoe boxes containing small gifts and sweets are on their way to Romania from East Leake this year! A big thank you to all who filled a box. You will make a child very happy this Christmas.

Posada. This tradition started in Mexico to represent the trials Mary and Joseph had trying to find a place at an inn on their journey to Bethlehem. The Mary and Joseph figurines from our church nativity scene, are invited into our own homes for a night during Advent. Would you like to invite them into your home? If so, please sign the list at the back of church as it's filling up quickly.

Christmas Card Fair & Coffee Morning, Friday November 5th. The clocks have changed, the gales have brought most of the leaves down and the shops are full of Christmas goodies. Our own Christmas Card Fair and Coffee Morning brought many folks in to buy the various cards, Advent calendars and delicious cakes.

'TURKEY AND TINSEL' event at St Mary's Church, Thursday, 25th November, starting at 10.30am-3.00pm approx. This event is for older/young at heart persons. £5 inclusive. Coffee, lunch and entertainment. Please contact Gill, Doris, Pam or Jan to sign up and for further details. If you can't get away for a holiday, come and join the fun for a day. Transport can be provided for those with mobility problems.

PARISH WEEKEND 28th - 30th JANUARY 2011 at WILLERSLEY CASTLE, DERBYSHIRE.

Church Cleaning - we need your help.
There is a small rota of people who clean the church for a couple of hours approximately every other month - mainly sweeping and dusting.
With more helpers it would be less. Can you help?
The work is not hard and you would be working with another person.

It's that time of year again when we change the clocks back one hour. Don't forget to move your clocks BACK this Sunday, October 31st.

The Community Choir is coming along nicely after two weeks of practice. Next Thursday, at 7.30pm in St Mary's Church will be the last week, before rehearsals start for the Christmas services and events. We hope to continue and encourage anyone from the East Leake community to come and join us, as it's not just for St Mary's people. Wouldn't it be great if we could have an East Leake Choir?

Next Friday, 5th November might be Bonfire Night but it's also the day when St Mary's will be holding its Annual Christmas Card Fair and Coffee Morning from 10,00-12 noon. There is a wide choice of Christmas cards, Advent calendars and for those with a sweet tooth, a Cake Sale. All proceeds of the cake sale will go to St Mary's church funds, so if you're able to bake and contribute a cake to this sale, it would be much appreciated.

Other upcoming events are as follows:

We welcome a visit from pupils and their teachers from Brookside School to the church on Tuesday morning, 2nd Nov.
The Banner Group meets at the Catholic Church at 2.00pm on Tuesday, 2nd Nov.
The Abbot Club meets at the Nags Head on Wednesday, 3rd Nov. at 8.00pm
On Saturday, 6th Nov from 9.30am onwards, the churchyard teams will gather to combine efforts to clean and tidy up the churchyard for the winter. If it's wet, they will meet the following week on the 13th Nov. If you enjoy gardening, the teams will be glad of your help.
Sunday, 7th Nov is the 1st Sunday of the month when there is a second service held at 11.15am at St Mary's which is less formal. If you can't get up early enough but miss the service, come on along.
Also every 1st Sunday is 'Teatime Sunday' at 4.00pm in St Mary's Hall.
Sun 7th Commemoration of the Departed. Our annual service to remember our departed loved ones will be held at 6pm in St. Helena’s Church, West Leake.

On Monday 1st November at 12 noon, there will be a service of celebration and thanks for Gill's life at St Mary's Church, East Leake.

The family will attend a private cremation at Loughborough then arrive at St Mary's for the service.

It is John's wish that people attending should wear colours, not black.

I know, I know, it's too early to plan for Christmas just yet, but there are some things which DO need thinking about before Advent is upon us. We have received the annual request from HOST, the organisation which tries to help those who are at University and away from home at Christmas. See below:

Home for Christmas
Are you spending Christmas at home this year? Would you consider including an international student from a university in the UK in your plans? There are so many students here from China, India, and many other countries, who are unable to go back at Christmas. They would love to spend two or three days in a real home, rather than an empty hall of residence.

For many, Christmas will be an entirely new experience. Staying with you, they could find out what it is all about, as well as enjoying home-cooked food, joining in with your activities, and seeing a little of the country away from the campus. You do not need to live near a university, as many students are happy to travel to have this opportunity.
Your link with a student will be arranged by one of HOST’s voluntary regional organisers, who do their best to match hosts and guests who will enjoy one another’s company. HOST is a long-established national charity, founded by the British Council. Every HOST visit, whether for Christmas or for a weekend during the year, is a one-off, although sometimes lasting friendships are formed. The cultural exchange, and the contribution to international goodwill, are what make it all worthwhile.

Sad news.

Gill Sprake.
We have just received some very sad news. During the weekend of 9th/10th October Gill had been taken ill while taking a holiday with John, her husband and the family. On the afternoon of Monday 11th October John telephoned with the sad news that Gill had died.
Gill was a deeply committed Christian and over the years she has helped and encouraged many people in their faith. She served as a Reader in the Benefice and was a much loved and valued member of our staff team. Gill will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Our thoughts and prayers are with John and the family.

Jewellery-Making Evening at St Mary's Church. Tuesday, 12th, 7.30pm - £5 fee. This is another opportunity to try your hand at making your own jewellery or making some as Christmas gifts. Please contact Cora to book your place on 856435. Please note that this session takes place in St Mary's Church! Come along for good company and learn how to do it. All the tools and beads are provided and you will be shown how to do it, if you've never tried before.

Half Term holiday starts next week, 18th Oct. for Leics. schools and Notts. schools the week after, 25th Oct. How time flies!

Would folks please be aware that potted plants, flowers and sometimes with their vases are being taken from St Mary's churchyard? This has been happening for several weeks now and has been extremely upsetting for those who wish to remember their loved ones with flowers. Please let the churchwardens or the police know if you see anyone taking flowers from the churchyard.

There are so many decisions to make when you're planning the future, in your personal life, your work or in your church. In the past year, we have been busy gathering information, ideas, planning and praying for the future of St Mary's and our role in the community. Part of the church development will be explained at two Presentations planned for October 3rd and 10th after the 9.30am services. All members of the congregation and supporters have been invited and we look forward to seeing you at one of these important meetings.

Our events are open to the East Leake Community - see below and we'd love to see you at any of them. We have something for every age and are looking for YOU to join us, especially if you are looking for companionship, new friends, new activities or just someone to talk to if you need help or need to share a problem. Christians are just like you - our lives are no different EXCEPT we have God's love to help and support us, and that enables us to do the same for others.

Harvest Thanksgiving Service this Sunday.

St Mary's Harvest Thanksgiving Service will be held this Sunday, 26th September at 9.30am.

All harvest gifts may be presented at the service.
We shall especially be pleased to receive non-perishable foods and toiletries, which will be donated to the Friary Drop-In Centre at West Bridgford, helping homeless people.

Harvest Walk, 2.30pm. Something new this year for the whole community!

There is a circular walk for all ages of about 3 miles, finishing at St Mary's for tea, sandwiches and cake at 4.00pm. If you can come and/or contribute towards the refreshments please sign the form at the back of church to give an idea of numbers.

We're nearing the end of September already and there's lots of things happening in October. See our website for details.

Incidents in Church and Churchyard

If you have tried to visit St. Mary’s Church and found the door locked on a few occasions recently, this is because there have been reports of people acting suspiciously in and around the church. There has also been some petty theft and vandalism in the church and in the Garden of Remembrance. Many people, reading this, will be upset and even outraged to think of the distress caused to bereaved persons. It is also upsetting to learn of people causing damage in a church building and not treating God’s house with respect. I hope that we can resume our practice of keeping the church open during the daytime, so that those who wish to slip into church to pray or just to sit quietly can continue to do so. To help us to achieve that aim, I should be grateful if people who visit or go past the church and churchyard would be vigilant and report anything suspicious.

EAST LEAKE AND DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
The society is always on the lookout for photographs and documents, memorabilia relating to the history and people in our parish, for example the current form of the parish magazine ‘Compass’ started in 1979 but there was another format prior to that one. Are there any copies hidden away anywhere? There were over 200 editions – if there was one printed each month that is nearly twenty years so does anyone know anything about them?? Or anything even older. If so please contact Tony Grundy on 820646.

Young People's Service this weekend!

On Sunday, 19th Sept there is to be a special Cluster service for and by our young people at St Lawrence Church, Gotham at 10.30am. Please come along and support them in this newly re-ordered church. The theme of the service is 'Come Celebrate - We are Family'.

Please note that there will only be a said service on the 19th Sept. at St Mary's Church at 9.00am.

Acorns. Tuesday afternoons every two weeks on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month in St Mary's Hall, E Leake from 1.45-2.45pm. This group is for pre-schoolers, Mums and Carers. Do come along and enjoy crafts, songs, stories, chat and a cup of coffee/tea. The group will be meeting today, 14th Sept for the new session - the theme is 'Lost Sheep'.

Harvest. The season of Harvest is upon us and St Mary's Harvest Thanksgiving Service will be held on Sunday, 26th Sept. All harvest gifts may be presented at the service. What have the young people been up to over the summer?

Our young people came together recently to meet up after the summer, share news and to give some ideas about what they would like to do in the future. For some it has been the summer of exam results and they’ve done well so we offer them our congratulations. One person even managed to score 100% in her A S Level politics exam!

Some of our young people went to Soul Survivor for a week and apart from all of them saying, “It was wet!” they saw some amazing things and grew in their faith. 'Awesome' seemed to be the favourite comment.

One of our young people spent three weeks in London working and performing with The National Youth Theatre in a mega street performance that travelled along the South Bank.

We have been struggling to decide what would be best to offer our young people in terms of a replacement for Sunday Sanctuary, which is no longer meeting on a Sunday night at St Mary's, East Leake. Watch out for more information on the when and where they're going next.

Back to School!

School is back in and St Mary's Hall is busy again. The usual uniformed organisations are starting back this week, and we have other groups starting too.

Mondays, starting on 13th Sept. Street Dance classes will begin at 1.00pm. This a continuation of the classes which ran at the Leisure Centre some time ago.
Tuesdays - Twinkle Tots are back at 9.15am-11.15am.
Tuesdays - Acorns are back every two weeks starting today, 7th Sept at 1.30-3.30pm
Tuesdays - Slimming World at 6.00pm which runs year round.
Wednesdays - EL & District Local History Group are back monthly, starting on 15th Sept at 7.30pm
Fridays - Craft Class at 9.00-11.00am is starting again.

Cora Fryer, our Outreach Worker also has some plans up her sleeve. Watch the blog and website for further details.

The leaking roof has been patched up on the outside. Once we know it is weatherproof, work will being on the inside of the Gents toilet ceiling.

An enlightening visit.

On Sunday, we were pleased to welcome Sam and Violette Beeton for a special United Benefice Service at 10.00am, along with two representatives of the Church Mission Society (CMS). We were treated to a presentation of photographs showing what Madasgascar is like, where Sam and Violette live and work and what they do there. We were even invited to visit Madagascar for our holidays!

We were especially pleased to hear that the funds St Mary's gives to CMS have indeed made their work possible. One of Violette's roles is to teach some of the women to sew; there is training for farmers on how to take care of their crops and Sam's role is in education, training people for the ministry. Some of those recently ordained have a tough life ahead of them, working in remote places.

After the service and talking to the congregation during refreshments, about 20 people went to the Rectory for a Bring and Share lunch. It was a good opportunity to find out more about Violette and Sam's life in Madagascar. The inclement weather made it difficult to decide where to hold it, but inside the Rectory was the favourite. Many thanks to everyone who helped provide the banquet and to the Rector for the use of the Rectory at VERY short notice. We thank Violette and Sam for a wonderful visit and send them our best wishes and prayers.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who turned up on Saturday to give the church its annual clean. Special thanks to Avril for organising and co-ordinating all the work and to those who provided very welcome refreshments midway through the morning.

If anyone is available next Saturday, 28th around 10.00am (the Bank Holiday) we would appreciate any help cleaning the Hall ready for the start of term.

For those not visiting family and having no plans for the Bank Holiday weekend in the community, why not join us and meet our Mission Partners, Sam and Violette Beeton who are working in Madagascar, at the Sunday 10.00am United Parish Service (please note NOT at the usual time of 9.30am). This is an opportunity for everyone from our five parishes to get together socially and to meet Sam and Violette.

Then there is a Bring and Share lunch in the Rectory garden (weather permitting) at 12.30pm. Bring any plate or dish of food to share with others e.g. filled rolls, a cake/s, fruit or snacks. We always end up being blessed with a real feast! In fact, whenever we get together we are truly blessed by God.

St Mary's Church and Hall

St Mary's is the Parish Church for East Leake. The Re-ordering of the interior in 2007 was funded from generous donations and charitable sources. However, a great deal of work goes on 'behind the scenes' throughout the year to keep the church and the hall in good repair. The long overdue repair of the vestry roof (since the 3rd lead theft last year) will begin soon, after having successfully battled to replace the lead with tiles to discourage any further thefts. Sourcing funding for these repairs is very onerous and time-consuming, so we are very thankful for your donations, some of which are Gift Aided, which are extremely welcome.

Members of the congregation will be working hard on Saturday morning giving the whole building a good clean and members of the East Leake community are very welcome to join us.

St Mary's Hall is also a community resource for all kinds of groups and events. Basic maintenance and running costs are covered by the charges for hiring the hall, but anything unexpected needs extra funds sourced mainly from charities or donations. As you might imagine in these straitened times not only are people struggling to manage their finances, the charities are inundated with requests for funds.
The roof of St Mary's hall is suffering from all the heavy rain we've had and unfortunately there are leaks in the Gents and Ladies toilets, but the main hall is unaffected. We plan to have these repaired before term starts, of course. Your support is needed to keep these buildings in good repair for your use and we appreciate the way in which all the user groups take care of the building. (See the list of groups using St Mary's Hall on our website and in the hall. New members are always welcome.)

Mothers' Union Wave of Prayer

Tomorrow, Tuesday 17th August is the National Mothers' Union Wave of Prayer and St Mary's group will be in the church praying from 10.00-10.45am.

The Wave of Prayer is an offering of prayer from and for Mothers' Union around the world. It is something that concerns every member as all take part in prayer for Mothers' Union in each diocese of the Anglican Communion in turn. Specific days in the year are therefore allocated to each diocese when prayers are focused on their work and needs.

N.B. This Saturday, 21st August volunteers will be meeting in the church to give it it's Annual Clean. Please come along in the morning to give us a hand. The more the merrier. Drinks provided for thirsty work!

You can't have missed all the televised reporting of the dreadful disasters across the world - floods in Pakistan, mudslides in China and high temperatures, fire and smog in Russia. It makes us think about what we're doing to our world and how much we exclude God. He isn't just a Sunday God, he's an all the time God. We need Him every day and we must listen to Him.

Things are beginning to happen!

Many of the Vision for St Mary's groups are meeting for the first time and things are moving.

The young people are having a BBQ on September 5th.
A Harvest walk for everyone is being planned for Sunday, September 26th followed by tea in the church.

The Communications group has provided an update leaflet, which will be distributed in church on Sunday.
If you can't make it this Sunday, please look for a leaflet or ask for one.
We hope to be able to use modern technology and email those who would like an emailed update soon too.

Church Vision for St Mary's needs YOU!

A great deal of prayer, discussion and work has been happening over the past months on the Vision for the future of St Mary's.

PCC members initially met in small groups to discuss ideas on the following topics:

Mission and Evangelism: Cora Fryer
Caring for the Church Family: Avril Bagshaw/Rosemary Barrow
Spiritual Growth: Jan Lewsey
Service to the Wider Community: Conrad Oatey
Communication and Publicity: Pat Brown

The congregation was then invited to a meeting for a presentation of the outcome and was asked for their response.
An Away Day was held for the PCC last month at the Convent to share the results and how they might be put into action. As a result, those named above, agreed to lead the relevant group for each topic.

Each of the groups are now meeting again to discuss the next plan of action involving those who have agreed to contribute to this important work.

Having reached this far, we hope you understand why it is taking so long and haven't given up hope of actually developing our mission for St Mary's.
There will be more updates as we proceed but this work can only be done with many hands and prayers. Therefore, you are invited to participate in any of the groupings, grow our church and grow your faith, so please contact the Rector, Churchwardens or any member of the PCC.

Diamond Wedding at St Mary's

Yesterday, before the 9.30am service Mr and Mrs Harry Kinder were presented with a bouquet and a card from members of St Mary's as a memento of their Diamond Wedding being celebrated this week.

The Rector asked them what was their recipe for such a long and happy marriage and Janet said they both agreed that it was Caring and Sharing.

We wish them both many more happy years together.
The special Evensong at Stanford church to celebrate David Chapman's 60 years as an organ builder, on Sunday, 18th July.

The organ recital also at Stanford Church on 23rd July raised over £1,000.

Please note that there are no regular user groups meeting during the summer, e.g. All the uniformed groups, Local History Group and Dance Groups.

However, there will be some events in the Hall.

Teatime Sunday will continue but a barbecue is being planned for the August session. Please contact Brenda Knight for details.
Slimming World continues throughout the year.
If you visited the Methodist Church on East Leake's Carnival Day, you will have seen Robin Borrett's Coloured Pencil Group's exhibition. He is holding an all day session in the Hall on August 14th for anyone wanting to join the group.

There will also be some Spring Cleaning and maintenance on the Hall and the Church over the summer. We will be very pleased to hear from anyone who would like to help our volunteers. Drinks and light refreshments will be provided. Currently August 21st is the Church Cleaning Day.

No Grand Day Out, but school's out for the summer!

We regret to say that the Grand Day Out has been cancelled due to lack of support. However, another day is being planned for later on this year. It was to be a relaxing, themed, fun day held in the church for those who find it difficult to get away for a holiday. We would like to meet and entertain you for the day and can arrange transport and a lunch out for everyone. All our events are a lot of fun - just ask anyone from St Mary's.

If you have heard about The Grand Day Out and would like to come to the next one, please let us know.

Friday Coffee Mornings, 10am-12noon. St Mary's Coffee Mornings will be continuing throughout the summer, so why not call in and share a cuppa with the growing numbers.

Teddy Bear's Picnic. It's a shame the weather has changed to wet and windy because it dampened the Teddy Bear's Picnic on Tuesday, but I'm sure the little ones still had lots of fun.

School Holidays. This Friday, 16th July is the last day for Leicestershire schools, so please be aware that there will be lots of excited young people around the village more interested in their holidays than anything else. Please note that Nottinghamshire schools finish in one more week.

Planning for our church's mission.

The work of the church doesn't just happen. It takes planning, co-ordination and hard work. The clergy staff and St Mary's PCC (Parochial Church Council), who are ordinary members of the congregation were busy all Saturday at an Away Day at the Convent, discussing the vision for the church. This ranged from how we help each other grow in our faith, to caring for and including others in all our services and events - what we all as Christian should be doing in our lives.

The brainstorming sessions were quite intense but the delicious 'bring and share' lunch proved a welcome break, as well the opportunity to walk in the wonderful gardens in the sunshine for a quiet time. Further work on developing the ideas is continuing and we need everyone to make them happen. Our Mission for the church to grow cannot happen without YOUR help. It is hard to keep everyone up to date with all that's going on, but we'll keep trying!

One of the ways we will be working with those in the community is the Grand Day Out planned for next week on Thursday, 22nd July. Please see our website and the Forthcoming Events column. There is a meeting tomorrow to finalise the plans and LOTS of helpers are needed. Can you help for a part of the day, or with refreshments? Come along to the meeting at 7.30pm and discover what's needed, then join in the fun on the day.

Next Sunday, 18th July, 6pm is a special service at Stanford on Soar church to celebrate David Chapman's 60th Anniversary as Organbuilder. There will be a special Choral Evensong with the combined choirs of the East Leake Benefice with David Jackson as organist.

There is also an Evening with Carlo Curley on Friday 23rd July at 7.30pm at Stanford on the magnificent Wills organ. Tickets are £10 adults, £5 for age 16 and under to include light refreshments. Contact Sue on 0787 9861599 or David Chapman.
